About the Artist. . .
Michael Tang is 12 years old and in the seventh grade. He is a member of our Young Artists Class and has studied with Jo Anne for the past five years. Michael has participated in numerous performances, auditions and competitions. This fall, he was awarded Honorable Mention (3rd Place) in the State Junior Division of the 2011 Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) National Young Artist Competition. This is especially impressive as Michael was among the youngest of this age category (11-14) in a state nationally known for its outstanding production of top pianistic talent. The repertoire demands of this competition are very significant as Michael performed a 30 minute solo program. He was three-time finalist in the Junior Concerto Competition of our Young Artist World Piano Festival in 2011, 2010, and 2009. During each of the same years, he was also selected to perform in our Young Artist World Piano Festival Junior Honors Recitals. He was a finalist in the 2011 and 2009 Saint Paul Piano Teacher’s Association (SPPTA) Concerto Competition and received Honorable Mention in the 2010 Minneapolis Music Teachers Forum (MMTF) Mozart Concerto Competition. Michael, who is known among the faculty and peers of our Festival as “The Gentleman Virtuoso” plays a leading role at Crocus Hill Studios, enjoying and supporting his fellow musicians.
